E T Communications UK Ltd. was established in November 2004 to provide services and software to broadcasters and broadcast suppliers.

I am Eric Thorniley, and I founded the company on retiring from ITN. You can access my experience through this company. A few highlights from my career include:

I was Manager of Engineering Projects for the technical build of the new Norman Foster designed ITN building back in 1990. I was the technical architect of the broadcast systems and devised the method of splitting the work between the multiple contractors we used. (An £18,000,000 project delivered in budget and on time.) In later years, I added the management of the broadcast and IT support departments to this role.

For the launch of TV2 Norway, ITN provided an installation service. We undertook the installation of the studios, newsroom computer system and playout automation.

More recently, as Head of Technical Development, I brought the Quantel/Omnibus server system on line. ITN (together with Quantel) won an Emmy award for this project.

I have also been responsible for automating ITN's graphics systems, for which I have personally written the control software. This is recent work which has given me a good understanding of current software development methods.

The expertise I can offer ranges from advice on how to manage large broadcast engineering projects with many contractors, to developing small individual software applications that are robust for use in a live environment. I have management experience within a broadcast organisation, including contract work for another broadcaster. In particular, I am able to translate the aspirations of journalists and production staff into successful engineering solutions.
